Microsoft has released a new capability for Outlook (both 2003 and 2007) that allows users to access their Facebook social network (as well as MySpace and LinkedIn) from their email inbox!

In Microsoft’s blog post, they describe the following capabilities available in this plugin:

Online videos are a “hot” commodity that can bring real value to your business or nonprofit website. Not only do they help convey your message more effectively than text or photos, but they also give you a better online footprint!

Videos (like those posted on YouTube) are indexed by search engines. Videos can have a greater chance of being on page 1 than regular page text! It is estimated that for keywords that Google provides video results, you are 50 times more likely to appear on page 1, compared to regular website text.

There are hundreds of social media sites, with more being born every day. The changing nature of online technologies means a new tool may already be popular since the writing of this article! It is hard to say what will happen next because no one can plan or regulate social media. However, there are three places that every business should explore using today: LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a social networking tool for professionals. Some businesses today are training their employees to use LinkedIn to increase their personal networks and business opportunities. It is the “new rolodex,” helping professionals stay connected as people move from job to job. It’s also a great way to connect with others to ask questions and advice, poll your target audience, share your experiences and post news about your business or industry.

Businesses are using social media tools to accomplish many goals that were once unachievable due to limited budgets or staff. As one example, expensive focus groups, surveys and market research is free or very low cost if conducted through social media. When using social media for business, it is important to understand the tools, set goals and measure results. According to Jupiter Research, 70 percent of viral marketers report increasing brand awareness as one of the most successful areas of their social marketing campaigns.

Although there are a multitude of ways that social media can be used to help businesses, below are three ideas:

Social media is not a fad that will simply fade away in a year or two. With the plethora of Web 2.0 tools and technologies, social media has become the new way of marketing. Businesses that don’t join in will miss important opportunities to engage in conversations, find new customers and promote their brand. Your marketing department can no longer determine what is published, who is interviewed and where information gets posted. The game has changed and conversations are happening with or without you. Business need to start pay attention to the conversations and provide information and interactions to support their brand.

Whether or not you want to engage in social media, there are three new marketing rules every business should follow:

Andy Rose from Rehmann Group posted a nice comment about one of the seminars we gave.

If you're using Twitter, Facebook or any other social networking site, you should be aware of the potential security dangers and vulnerabilities to your image and identity. "Members of online social networks may be more vulnerable to financial loss, identity theft and malware infection than they realize," according to a new survey from Webroot.

Whether you are a new Friend or an accomplished Twitterer, here are a few things you DON'T want to do:

With hundreds of social networking sites out there, how can you decide which ones might be right for you?
  • Facebook: Engage fans with your brand.
  • Twitter: Send quick messages of news, information, products, and more with links to drive traffic.
  • MySpace: Engage young people or a group culture.
  • LinkedIn: Build your professional network and grow contacts quickly.
Below is a quick synopsis with pros/cons of Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and LinkedIn.
