Optimize Your Facebook Personal Profile for Business

Wednesday, 04 August 2010

Do you want to know how to get the most from your Facebook personal profile for business?

Many professionals are worried about wasting time on social networking sites, but the truth is there is a lot to gain from these interactions. Below are 6 tips to help you create a complete and compelling profile to better manage your Facebook presence for business.

Tip 1: Complete Your Info Tab

Include as much business information in your “Info” tab as possible. Include information about employment, education, interests, family and anything you want people to know. (Tip: Do not provide your birthday and hometown because it makes it easy for people to steal your identity.)

Tip 2: Show Personality in Your Profile Photo

Only upload profile photos that show the “best” view of your personality or business. You can choose to use just 1 standard professional photo. Or, change out your photo to show something more recent about you. For example, having fun on vacation, talking at a conference, and so on. Changing your profile photo on a monthly basis will give more information to your friends about you. When a friend sees a new profile photo, they’re likely to click on it to see it better, which takes them to your Wall.

Tip 3: Post in the About Box

Post something about yourself in the about box. (It’s located directly below your profile photo.) This is like the sticky note of your profile. It will stay there for everyone to see. You can post a favorite quote, links to website/blog/social media, or something new about yourself. (Tip: For links, include the http:// before the web address to make it a real link.)

Tip 4: Invite your Business Network to be Friends

Drive traffic to your profile page by connecting to customers, partners, mentors, business community members, and friends. Invite people in your business network to be friends with you on Facebook. Those friends and their friends will likely browse and read your profile.

Tip 5: Join the Conversation Party

Be passionate about your business and help tell the story of your brand. But, don’t be there to sell and advertise your business or products. Allow your “friends” to advertise for you and recommend you. Tell us what’s happening with you, what you’re thinking, and give details that “come from the heart.” (Tip: At least once a month, post a comment to each friend, business page and group to keep in touch.)

Tip 6: Optimize for Facebook Search

Users can search the last 30 days of your News Feed for status updates, photos, links, videos and notes being shared by your friends and the Facebook Pages of which you're a fan. If you make your content available to everyone, users will be able to search and read your status updates, links and notes, regardless of whether or not you are friends. (Tip: Update your privacy settings for “everyone” to see what you’re posting and doing.)
